(At base of neck:) Walker Hancock signed

Head and neck of young man, apparently in early twenties. Hair brushed back but with indications of parting on left side. Ears small without independent lobes. Upper lip heavy with philtrum; chin with dimple at point. Nose broad. Right eyebrow slightly flattened while left is normal.

Extracted from artist's letter to Mr. Nagel, dated Oct. 9, 1942: "The young engineering student who posed for this head is of Finnish parentage. It so happens that his first name - Ahti - is the young hero of the Finnish epic 'Kalevala.' It seemed appropriate, therefore, to use it as a title for the bronze head."
