    Description: 
    A bearded portrait of A. J. Stevens wearing the conventional dress of his time. He stands with his proper left arm resting on a rostrum. The sculpture is placed atop an incised pedestal that is decorated at its lower front with a relief of a locomotive.

    Remarks: 
    A. J. Stevens was the master mechanic for Southern Pacific Company. The sculpture was erected by his coworkers. An estimated twelve thousand attended the dedication ceremony, with Governor Waterman and Mayor Gregory in attendance. IAS files contain a related article from the Sacramento Daily Record, Nov. 29, 1889, pg. 1.
