Remarks:  When given to the museum the bust was cleaned and a base was added by a Mr. Osie. The inscription on the base is the legend composed for the bust by Lamb and Ward. The inscription reads: HON. ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS/MODELED BY J. Q. A. WARD SCULPTOR AT THE STEPHENS HOME CRAWFORDSVILLE GA./A.D. 1858. CARVED IN MARBLE AND PRESENTED TO MRS. ROBERT TOOMBS BY MR./STEPHENS A. D. 1859. THIS THE ORIGINAL BUST IS PRESENTED BY THE SCULPTOR/TO THE CONFEDERATE MUSEUM RICHMOND VA. A. D. 1909. References:  Museum of the Confederacy, 1988.
