Joseph Spencer (1714-1789), a native of East Haddam, served in the Continental Army. After the monument was erected in 1904, his remains and those of his wife were moved from Millington Cemetery and reinterred on the site. IAS files contain related article from the Hartford Courant, April 15, 1962 and a copy of the dedication program.
