    Remarks: 
    Henderson Middleton Somerville, Sr. was the son of Dr. James Somerville and Helen Glassell Wallace of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was the founder and first dean of the University of Alabama School of Law. Later he was a judge and justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. In 1890, he was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison to the Board of the United States General Appraisers Judicial Department of the Customs Service in New York City. Three copies of this portrait were painted in the early 1960s, from an earlier photograph, and are now hanging in 1) the Alabama Supreme Court Building in Montgomery, AL; 2) the University of Alabama School of Law in Tuscaloosa, AL; and 3) the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, Birmingham, AL.
