Description:
A rectangular black granite stele with a bronze relief of the space shuttle Challenger surrounded by etched faces of the seven crew members who died when Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986. Under each portrait is a bronze plaque with the astronaut's name and title. The sculpture rests on a rectangular base containing an inscription plaque adorned with a flag and the NASA logo. A metal fence surrounds the memorial.

Remarks:
The monument commemorates the seven crew members who died when the Challenger space shuttle exploded on January 28, 1986. The memorial was funded with $11,000 raised through contributions by students from all thirty-nine public and private schools in Elizabeth, New Jersey. IAS files contain two newspaper articles from The Daily Journal (Elizabeth, NJ), Oct. 11, 1986, pg. 1, 4; and Oct. 23, 1986, pg. 1, 28 (with discussion of the dedication).
