Remarks:
James Sinkler was born in 1740 (or 1742) in Scotland, and came to settle in South Carolina as a young man. He was one of the first indigo planters in the region and his plantation, Old Sinklers, was along the Santee River. He married Sarah Cantey and following her death, married Sarah's half sister, Margaret. He died in 1800 and is buried at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The painting has been on loan to the Columbia Museum of Art since 1968.
