Inscription:  (Bronze plaque on lower front of sculpture, raised lettering:) THIS MONUMENT DEDICATED TO/"SEVEN ASTRONAUTS"/WHO DIED NATIONAL HEROES/AS MEMBERS OF THE CREW OF THE/"CHALLENGER"/JANUARY 28, 1986/ERECTED IN MEMORY BY THE STUDENTS OF ELIZABETH/OCTOBER 22, 1986 unsigned Description:  A rectangular black granite stele with a bronze relief of the space shuttle Challenger surrounded by etched faces of the seven crew members who died when Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986. Under each portrait is a bronze plaque with the astronaut's name and title. The sculpture rests on a rectangular base containing an inscription plaque adorned with a flag and the NASA logo. A metal fence surrounds the memorial. The memorial was funded with $11,000 raised through contributions by students from all thirty-nine public and private schools in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
