Description:
Low relief plaques depict various significant people and events in Arizona and Cochise County history. The first plaque shows Coronado's army, led by Estevan, arriving in the Southwest in 1539. An equestrian figure of Coronado and his army in 1540 is on the second plaque. Also present are Franciscan monks and a pair of oxen. The third plaque shows a Mormon pioneer family traveling west as part of a wagon train in 1846. An 1860 Pony Express rider is shown in the fourth panel. Portraits of Apache leaders Cochise and Geronimo are depicted in the fifth panel. The sixth plaque is a composite of images of Tombstone, Arizona, once the County seat. Images include Ed Schieffelin, discoverer of Tombstone's silver lode in 1877, a stagecoach, horses, dancers a hand of cards and an outlaw at the gallows. The seventh plaque is a composite of the mining industry and the eighth plaque is a composite of the cattle industry, featuring cowboys and a herd of cattle.

Remarks:
Commissioned as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. Mark Vories, director of WPA art in Bisbee, helped plan the series. IAS files include an excerpt from "The Sculpture of Raymond Phillips Sanderson," by Tamara Jane Snively, an abstract of a Master's Thesis, Arizona State University, January 1973, and an excerpt from "The WPA Guide to 1930s Arizona," (Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 1989).
