Robt. Wood & Co. Founders Phila. (On front of base:) TO THE MEMORY/OF/DAVID AUSTIN SAYRE/AND HIS WIFE/ABBY VANHOLT SAYRE./BORN NOVEMBER 17, 1798/DIED MARCH 10, 1871. (Back and sides of base inscribed with names of additional Sayre family members with birth and death dates) unsigned Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Standing figure of mature man in early 19th-century attire, enclosed in a roofed Greek temple. Man wears unbuttoned knee-length jacket, waistcoat, high-collar, and tie. He stands with both feet firmly planted, proper right forward and proper left behind; grasps a rolled document in proper right hand. Proper left arm hangs free by left side. Statue stands at center of temple, which consists of four fluted columns supporting a roof with a single deep coffer. Temple stands on a high four-sided base, inscribed on each side.
