Description:
Four men are shown around a table that is covered with a white cloth and set with cups, plates, napkins, etc. The men include a Scottish writer and three American artists. Three of the men are seated at the table, while the fourth stands in the left background. They are illuminated by a lamp hanging over the table. At far left a fire burns in a fireplace. The standing figure at left, who may be Willard Leroy Metcalf, is reflected in a mirror hanging over the mantel. He is lighting a pipe.
The man seated at the table, left of center, is John Henry Twachtman. His proper right arm is resting on the back of his chair, while he holds a cup in his proper left hand. The man seated right of center background is Theodore Robinson. In the right foreground is Robert Louis Stevenson, shown in profile, reading a newspaper which he holds in his proper left hand. His proper right arm rests on the table with his hand raised to his head. Stevenson is shown with a mustache, while the other three figures wear both mustaches and goatees.

Denver Art Museum, 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway, Denver, Colorado 80204 Accession Number: 1974.18

Gift of Hanley, T. Edward, Dr. & Mrs., Bradford, Pennsylvania Dec. 1969.
Remarks:
In 1977, Denver Art Museum reported that research was in process to confirm the identification of this painting's portrait subjects as John Henry Twachtman, Theodore Robinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Childe Hassam. In his 1982 publication "Americans in Brittany and Normandy 1860-1910," David Sellin wrote that the group pictured was John Henry Twachtman, Theodore Robinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, and possibly Willard Leroy Metcalf, the painter of this work.
