Norbert Rillieux was an inventor who developed a less expensive way of processing sugar cane into a fine grade of sugar. The bust is part of a series Hardison began in the mid 1960s entitled "Ingenious Americans." There were nine busts, spread over two releases, sponsored by the Old Taylor Distillery Company of Frankfort and Louisville, Kentucky. The busts were sold and shipped for $5.00. Each bust had a nameplate on the front and a description of the subject's accomplishments on the underside of the base.
