Born in Maryland, Reynolds was married to Sarah Longley (1786-1854), In very early adulthood, the young couple moved to Flemingsburg, Fleming County, Kentucky. The watercolor was made, probably in the Flemingsburg area about 1810. The couple's first child, William Floyd Reynolds (1811-1880), was born in Flemingsburg. Between 1830 and 1840 (from the US Census), the family moved to the new town of Lafayette, Indiana.
