Allen Dunn Ramsey was born at Ramsey's Ferry in Batesville, Arkansas in 1822. His father was William Ramsey, who along with three other Scottish families (the Simpsons, Haydens, and Dunns), moved from Indiana to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and then settled in Batesville, Arkansas around 1819. Allen lived with relatives and attended high school near Alexandria, Virginia. He returned to Ramsey's Ferry where he farmed the land and operated a ferry on the White River. He married Helen F. Slater in Batesville on Jan. 26, 1846. They had five children, Margaret, William, Maria, Mary, and David. He died on Dec. 31, 1878, leaving his wife and four surviving children. The donor is the great great granddaughter of Allen Dunn Ramsey.
