Subject:  Portrait male -- Pilsudski, Josef -- Head Occupation -- Military Occupation -- Political Ethnic -- Polish Object Type:  Sculpture Owner:  Ministry of Defense, Department of Justice, Josef Pilsudski Square, Warsaw, Poland Remarks:  Josef Pilsudski was Polish military leader and founder of the Polish Socialist Party, who went on to become chief of state from 1918-1922. The sculpture of Josef Pilsudski was commissioned in 1935 by an architect of a Warsaw university, but the sculpture never reached Poland due to growing oppression by Nazi Germany. In the early days of World War II, the sculptor arranged to send his portrait of Pilsudski from his Vienna studio to London, where is was safeguarded it in a special air raid shelter until it could be shipped to the U.S. After World War II, the sculpture was exhibited in more than thirty American museums. Fifty-five years later, the sculptor enlisted the support of Polish-American foundations, private patrons, businesses, and the Polish ambassador to help fund the transportation and installation of the one 2,000 pound sculpture in Poland.
