Charles Ferdinand Penzel was born on Oct. 8, 1840 in Asche, Bohemia and died on Feb. 16, 1906 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He came to America in 1857 through the port of New Orleans. On Jan. 1, 1873 he married Rosa Eisenmayer in Illinois. He rendered Confederate service during the Civil War. He was the founder of the Little Rock Orphans Home. He was also a wholesale grocer with Kramer, Miller & Co., in 1870. He was the founder of the German National Bank, was president of the Exchange National Bank, and was president of the Commercial Warehouse Company. This portrait was painted in Virginia.
