Waist-length portrait of Richard Paton seated at a desk holding a bronze medal with his proper right hand and pointing to an engraving of a ship with his left hand. A red curtain is in the background, and an exploding ship is seen at right.

Remarks:
The painting was bought in London in 1847 by James H. Hammond of Columbia S. C. It was inherited by his son, Edward Spann Hammond of Blackville, and then by its last owner, James H. Hammond, from whom it is on indefinite loan to the Museum.
Richard Paton (ca. 1716-1791) worked at sea, as an excise officer and general accountant, where he also painted.
