Remarks:
Philip Nicklin (1759-1806), who immigrated to Philadelphia from Staffordshire, England, was a successful businessman. He married Juliana Chew on April 1, 1793. The painting was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, "Loan Exhibition of Historical Portraits," Dec. 1, 1887-Jan. 15, 1888, no. 306.
