Samuel Mayo Nickerson helped establish the First National Bank of Chicago in 1865, and upon the death of Edmund Aiken was elected its president in 1867, a position held until 1891. He assumed the position again from 1897-1900, when the bank's president became secretary of the treasury. Nickerson was also director of the Art Institute of Chicago and donated an important collection of oriental art in 1900.
