Description:
Portrait of Angus Nickelson, his wife, and seven children in formal attire in the family parlor lined with bookcases on one side and festooned windows on the other. Angus is seated in front of his desk and bookcase, a business card that reads "Angus Nicholson/merchant/New Milford" is held in his right hand. His two older sons, Samuel Malcolm and Angus stand next to him. His wife is seated on the opposite side of the room, in front of the festooned windows. She is flanked by the two youngest children, Mary Ann and baby Donald. In the middle of the family grouping are older daughters, Barbara and Ann, seated on a sofa, with Sarah standing next to them.

Remarks:
The painting descended through the family of Angus Nickelson. Angus Nickelson (1735-1804), who came to this country from Scotland in 1762 at the age of twenty-seven, became a leading citizen of New Milford, Connecticut, where he operated a prosperous iron works and marble quarry.
