Captain Jonathan Clifford Nickels, the son of David Nickels Sr. and Catherine H. Clifford Nickels, was born in 1827, and married twice, and died in 1889 at the age of sixty-two. In 1855 he married Henrietta K. Thompson, and a companion portrait of her is now lost, but a photograph of the painting still exists.
