Michael Charles Mulligan was owner and operator of the M.C. Mulligan & Son Co. limestone quarry in Clinton, New Jersey. The painting is a one of a pair of portraits of Mulligan and his wife, Mary Owens Mulligan (see IAP entry 31290004).
