Description:
Fifty-three medallion reliefs placed on exterior walls of the Tennessee Aquarium. The time line formed by the medallions depicts themes from Tennessee's history, including myths, rituals and lifestyles of the Native Americans, the arrival of the Europeans, the coming of new settlers and the displacement of the Native Americans, the growth of new industries and transportation, the creation of the TVA to deal with land and river overuse problems, the river's present life, and the establishment of the Oak Ridge atomic research site.

Remarks:
IAS files contain copy of pamphlet "River Scenes at the Tennessee Aquarium," published by The Tennessee Aquarium, which illustrates and gives detailed subject descriptions of each medallion. The River Scenes were sculpted by Claire Nivola, following the concept of Peter Chermayeff, principal architect of Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc., who designed the aquarium. Text and script were written by Sherry Kafka Wagner, with research by Barbara Meyer. Fabrication was done at Skylight Studios.
