Waist-length portrait of a man in what appears to be an English uniform (navy-blue jacket with gold buttons, a red waistcoat, and a white shirt with a bow and ruffled front). His right hand is inserted in front of his waistcoat. The miniature is encased in a gold frame with a glass cover.

Alexander Montgomery came to American in 1734 with his wife and son, from Londonderry, Ireland. He and his wife had four or five more children in America. One of his daughters, Anne Montgomery, married William Lewis, the son of John Lewis, founderj of Staunton, Virginia. Anne and William Lewis' son, also John Lewis, married Mary Preston, daughter of Col. William Preston of Smithfield Plantation, Blacksburg, Virginia.
