    Description: 
    A bronze portrait of John Mitchell standing with his proper right hand extended and his proper left hand holding papers to his chest. The figure rests on a low square base in front of a granite niche that is adorned around the interior with a relief panel depicting miners excavating coal. On the exterior of the niche is a relief panel depicting a miner's family seated around a kitchen table. The sides of the niche are flanked by semicircular benches.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned by the United Mine Workers in 1924. John Mitchell (1870-1919) was the fifth president of the United Mine Workers of America (1899-1908). In 1902 he lead the strike of the anthracite coal miners which lasted from June 2 until Oct. 23, 1902. IAS files contain articles from the Scranton Times, Dec. 11, 1977 and The Miner's Lamp (Sept./Oct. 1992): pg. 1-3, a newsletter of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Association.
