Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Civil War general Thomas McManus, 1834-1914, a Hartford native born of Irish immigrants, and was erected by his Civil War comrades. McManus learned the carpenter's trade and worked at it for several years before being admitted to the bar in 1864. During the Civil War he was in the Twenty-fifth Connecticut Regiment and saw active service in Louisiana and commanded his regiment at Port Hudson. After the Civil War he became Judge of Hartford City Court from 1866 to 1868 and Judge of the Common Pleas for Hartford County from 1875 to 1877. He also represented Hartford in the State Legislature in 1878 and was Recorder of the Hartford City Court from 1893 to 1897. IAS files contain detailed biographical information on Mcmanus from "Hartford in 1912," Hartford: Hartford Post, 1912, pg. 157.
