Commissioned for the City's Percent for Art Program for approximately $100,000. The idea for the monument was first proposed by City Councilor Steve Gallegos in 1988. The low reliefs were designed so that visitors could easily take rubbings of the images. Each "tree" is illuminated with an in-ground footlight. IAS files contain a invitation to the dedication, a related article from the Albuquerque Journal, April 25, 1994 and a detailed artist's proposal, dated July 31, 1992.
