Remarks:
Son of Josiah Martin, the last of the Royal governors of North Carolina. He was educated at Oxford University and came to Tennessee in pioneer days, settling near Columbia, Tennessee. He married Margaret Esther Kennedy in 1803. He established and operated the George M. Martin School for Young Ladies in Columbia. He held the chair of languages at the Univ. of Nashville, and was one of the first teachers of Latin and Greek in Tennessee.
