Description:
A gravestone sculpture consisting of a tree trunk containing the bas-relief portrait of Eberle Martin in proper right profile from the neck up. He wears a brimmed hat and a collar is evident around his neck. The portrait is raised and framed by twisted branches. At the bottom of the trunk is a parchment (or bark) on which is the low relief outline of a squirrel standing on a log holding a nut in its front claws. A flintlock rifle and a powder horn are carved in high relief on the right side of the tree trunk. The trunk is mounted on a base resembling the striated rock of a canyon or cliffside. Remarks:
The sculpture marks the grave of fox hunter Eberle Martin who was born in 1867 and came to Mitchell, Indiana in 1891. It appears as if the sculpture was left unfinished as no death date has been inscribed for the deceased and the squirrel relief has not been completed.
