    Description: 
    A full-length portrait of James Marshall seen standing, pointing with his proper left hand to the spot on the American River below him, where he discovered gold. The sculpture is placed atop a tall inscribed multitiered base that is surrounded by a low railed fence.

    Remarks: 
    Erected by the State of California in memory of James W. Marshall, who discovered gold on January 24, 1848 in the tailrace of Sutters Mill at Coloma, California. His discovery sparked the great gold rush. The monument marks his gravesite and was built in 1889. The site for the monument was a gift from Placerville Parlor N.S.G.W. IAS files contain a brochure "Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park," State of California, Dept. of Parks & Recreation, July 1990.
