Description:
A band of relief panels on the fifth floor which illustrate episodes in the history of Chicago. Six of the panels are repeated on the building's north side and two of the panels are repeated on the building's east side. There are seven subjects: 1) The Portage, which shows the Jesuit missionary and explorer Father Jacques Marquette with Indians; 2) The Covered Wagon; 3) The Vanishing Indian, depicted in three small panels; 4) The Pioneer Woman; 5) The Trapper; 6) The Fort Dearborn Episode; and 7) The Peaceful Pacification of the Indians. The panels are in detailed in very low relief, and the silhouettes have been outlined by V-sunk cuts which give the appearance of line drawings.
