    Description: 
    A relief sculpture of three figures depicted in the act of signing of the treaty by which the United States acquired the Louisiana Purchase. The seated figure in the foreground is James Monroe. Standing behind him is Robert Livingston, U. S. Ambassador to France. Marbois, Napoleon's treasurer, is leaning over the table signing the treaty.

    Remarks: 
    The artist originally designed the sculpture in staff for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. His widow approved transforming it into bronze and bringing it from the St. Louis World's Fair to Jefferson City. The casting of the piece and the granite setting for the relief was overseen by Adolph Alexander Weinman, who also designed The Fountain of Centaurs in front of the relief.
