    Description: 
    Full-length portrait of the Reverend Amos Main. He is dressed in 18th century costume with buckled shoes, long hose, pants, a waistcoat, a long coat with ruffles at the sleeves and neck. His hair is pulled back into a long ponytail tied with ribbon. He carries a tri-corner hat and book in his proper left hand. He marks a place in the book with his finger. His proper right arm is extended in gesture. The bronze sculpture stands atop a granite base. The tall tapered die of the base has a moulded base and cornice. The base ends in two lower steps with slanted tops.

    Remarks: 
    Rev. Main was the first resident minister of the Congregational Church in Rochester, NH. Cost of the sculpture was $2,750; cost of the base was $1,430. Funds for the sculpture were provided for by Mrs. Sophia D. Hall, through an earlier bequest to the city; Mr. Charles Main, and other private donations. IAS files contain copy of dedication brochure. IAS files contain copy of related excerpt from David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historic Society, pg. 142-144. IAS files contain copy of related article from Rochester Courier, July 10, 1896.
