Remarks:
Originally part of a larger granite fountain and watering trough; now disassembled. The memorial fountain was a gift of William Kirkpatrick who bequeathed $12,000 to erect the fountain in honor of his father, Dr. William Kirkpatrick, Jesuit missionary Pere Simon LeMoyne, and the Onondaga Indians. The relief scene depicts the events of Aug. 16, 1654, when Pere LeMoyne was shown the Onondaga salt springs by the Onondaga Indians. Dr. Kirkpatrick was the superintendent of the salt springs from 1805 to 1806 and 1810 to 1830.
The sculpture is all that remains of a larger drinking fountain and water trough, originally installed in Washington Park, centered on Park Street. The fountain has been removed several times over the years, in 1969, and again in 1972, because of repeated vandalism and damage from being repeatedly struck by automobiles. It was reinstalled in 1977 and was capped in 1978.
IAS files contain the text of the inscription on the sculpture, related articles from the files of the Onondaga Historical Association and images of the fountain in its original form.
