Portrait at age eighty-four. Matthew Laflin was the builder of Chicago's first stockyard, first bus line, and first plank road. He built the Bull's head tavern, and the Fountain Spring Hotel in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He donated the Chicago Academy of Sciences building in 1893. The portrait was probably copied from an 1887 photograph.

In 2001 the original Chicago Academy of Sciences donated by Matthew Laflin III became the Administration Building for the Lincoln Park Zoo.
