    Description: 
    A shaft with inscribed images of the American flag and a medal, inscriptions, and a bronze plaque with a relief bust of Colonel William H. Kinsman. It rests atop a multitiered base with a relief of crossed swords. The monument is surrounded by a low rock wall with cannons at the four corners.

    Remarks: 
    The statue commemorates Civil War veteran, William H. Kinsman and was erected by his comrades and through public subscription, the help of school children and patriotic organizations. Colonel Kinsman, of the Twenty-third Iowa regiment, was killed at Black River Bayou, Mississippi, May 17, 1863, while leading his men into battle. He was a teacher in the public schools of Council Bluffs, and Lieutenant and Captain of the 4th Iowa Infantry. IAS files contain unidentified newsphoto. IAS files also contain transcription of nearby plaque.
