Description:
Eight figures, two on each side, in historical sequence beginning at west side of north face and moving counterclockwise around the tower to the east side. The figures represent the genius of human civilization, as embodied in the heroes of great epochs. Depicted are the Egyptian scribe Pentaour (representing the Dawn of History); Semitic seer Ezekiel (representing Cosmic Tradition); Greek philosopher Socrates (representing Birth of Reason); Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (representing Reign of Law); the Apostle John (representing the Glorification of Faith); King Louis IX of France (representing the Age of Chivalry); Renaissance scientist Isaac Newton (representing the Discovery of Nature); and Abraham Lincoln the Emancipator (representing the Liberation of Peoples).

Remarks:
Work on the "new" capitol (Nebraska's third) began in 1922 and was completed in 1934 at a cost of nearly ten million dollars. Goodhue was the architect; Lawrie, the sculptor. IAS files contain related excerpt from "A Harmony of the Arts: the Nebraska State Capitol," edited by Frederick Luebke, 1990; and excerpts from American Architect, Oct. 1934.
