Description:
Male figure of a soldier, Josias R. King, standing at ease with gun. Figure is mounted atop a tall marble base. On each side of upper section of base is a relief of a wreath, two crossed swords, and caps at the corners. Under the wreath on the front side are four stars in relief, and under each of the remaining three wreaths are three stars. On each side of lower section of base is a plaque. Three of the plaques feature inscriptions, while the fourth plaque bears reliefs of an eagle, cannonballs, a flag, and a star. Within the star, there are reliefs of objects in the corners, a circular inscription, and figures at the center.

Remarks:
Josias R. King (1832-1916) served with the First Minnesota Infantry for the Union Army during the Civil War. King had the distinction of being the first Minnesotan to enlist in the Union Army. Dedicated to Civil War veterans, the monument was erected by the Allied Organizations of the St. Paul Grand Army of the Republic, Acker Post. Total cost was $9,000. Monumental News (1903) gives base media as granite. IAS files contain related excerpts from book by Moira F. Harris, "Monumental Minnesota: A Guide to Outdoor Sculpture," St. Paul: Pogo Press, 1992, pg. 25, 30, 43.
