Remarks:
King David Kalakaua was born in 1836, and reigned as Hawaii's king from 1874 until his death in 1891, seven years before Hawaii's annexation by the United States. He was also a lawyer, writer, poet, inventor, composer, military leader and statesman. He attempted to revive traditional Hawaiian culture and strengthen Hawaiian sovereignty in response to foreign religious, economic and political influences. He was the first monarch to visit the United States, and is credited with reviving various Hawaiian art forms including the hula. The sculpture cost $40,000, with funding contributed by 130 individuals and businesses. The sculpture is located under a banyan tree reputedly planted by King Kalakaua. A time capsule was placed in the base.
