    Description: 
    A bronze figure of Anson Jones, seated with legs crossed at his ankles, wearing a bow tie, a vest, and a jacket. He holds an object with both hands in front of him. The sculpture sits atop the second of two pink Marble Falls granite pedestals. A third block of polished granite serves as a background.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was erected by the State of Texas with funds appropriated by the Commission of Control in federal funds. It commemorates 100 years of Texas independence. The sculpture is a portrait of Dr. Anson Jones, who moved to Texas in 1833. Jones participated in the Battle of San Jacinto as a surgeon in the Army of Texas; he served as a member of the Congress of the Republic from 1837 to 1841, Minister to the United States in 1838, Secretary of State from 1841-1844, and was the last President of the Republic of Texas from 1844 to 1845. Jones died in Houston, Texas in January of 1858.
