The portrait was painted by an unknown lower Mississippi Valley artisan, possibly painted while the recently married couple were on a wedding trip in the South. Dr. James Hyslop was born ca. 1817 in Rhinebeck, New York. Dr. Hyslop may have graduated from Union College, and later The New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, as he was a physician at one point on staff at Bellevue Hospital, New York. His younger brother was Dr. William Hyslop, 1829-1854/55, who graduated from Union College in 1849. In 1849 Dr. James Hyslop married Josephine Fletcher (1827-1886), the daughter of Jane and Joseph Fletcher. The couple had three children: Mary Buntling Hyslop, who later married, 1852-1930s; Josephine Fletcher Hyslop, 1853-1940; and Thomas C. Hyslop, 1859-1863. Home residence possibly 109 E. 19th Street. Dr. Hyslop died in May of 1870 in Brooklyn, New York, and is buried at Green Wood Cemetery, lot 3628, section 43.
