Description:
Sixteen symbolic figures and eight angels adorn the windows and entrances of the church. Around the window over the main entrance on 107th Street are reliefs of Moses, on the upper left, holding the Ten Commandments to represent the law; Elijah, on the upper right, holding a scroll and lightning bolts to represent the prophets; Peter, on the lower left, and Paul, on the lower right, to represent New Testament fulfillment and Old Testament prophecy.
On the south transept are reliefs of Amos the herdsman on the upper left and on the upper right, Hosea with a broken bow to symbolize Israel. On the north side are reliefs of Isaiah holding a tablet and Jeremiah holding a chain. These two figures represent faith and conviction. On the east side are reliefs of St. John Chrysostom in a posture of preaching and one of the early church fathers, St. Augustine of Hippo.
In niches over the entrance on Martin Luther King Boulevard are John Wycliffe, the morning star of the Reformation, on the upper left and on the upper right, John Huss, a martyr by fire because of his devotion to the Bible. In the center niche is John Wesley holding his hands to his heart.
In three parallel niches over the south entrance are the bishops of early American Methodism: Matthew Simpson, left, college president and preacher; Francis Asbury, center, pioneer bishop who traveled and preached the gospel throughout America; and James Thoburn, right, a missionary holding his Bible. Eight guardian angels adorn the octagonal parapets crowning the stone tower.
