Description:
A full-length standing figure of Howard Robard Hughes, seen wearing a hat, gloves, and a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a tie tucked into the front. He holds an oil drill bit in his proper right hand. The sculpture has a square base and is mounted upon a short, circular, polished granite base with paneled sides.

Remarks:
Howard Robard Hughes (1869-1924), the father of billionaire Howard Hughes, was a Texas oil pioneer, industrialist, and philanthropist. In 1901 he established a drilling and contracting business in Beaumont, and in 1907 invented the first drill bits that could penetrate hard rock, revolutionizing the oil industry. IAS files contain: transcription of nearby plaque; related excerpt with biographical information on Hughes from a Sea World brochure.
