Trinity Episcopal Church, Newport, Rhode Island
    Provenance:
Bequest of Tweedy, Catherine, Mrs., 1916.
    Remarks:
Rev. James Honyman served as a chaplain in the Royal Navy before becoming a missionary in America. On leave from his ship, HMS Active, he spent the summer of 1701 at Trinity Church in Newport and later returned from 1704-1750 to be the longest-serving clergyman at Trinity. He was a key figure not only for the development of the parish but a major figure behind creating Anglican missions in New England. In 1816, one of Honyman's granddaughters, Mrs. Catherine Tweedy, bequeathed this portrait to the parish. In 1774, Samuel Okey, an engraver working in Newport, published a mezzotint of this portrait.
