Description:
Bearded, uniformed figure of a late nineteenth century fireman Robert Brewster stands atop a tall pedestal on a tiered base. The figure holds a hose to his chest in his proper right hand and stands in front of a hydrant. A bugle is also present.

Provenance:
Formerly located Houston Fire Station #1, 410 Bagby at Preston, Houston, Texas 1974-1993.
Remarks:
Commissioned in 1888 by the Volunteer Fire Department composed of Protection No. 1, Hook & Ladder No. 1, Liberty No. 2, Stonewall No. 3, Mechanic No. 6, and Curtin No. 9 for $3,500. Funds were raised through public subscription and various fundraising events. The figure is Robert Brewster, then the oldest living fireman. From 1974 to 1993 the monument stood on the lawn of the Houston Fire station #1. It is now in its original site. IAS files include a transcription of the names of those honored on the plaques.
