Located Joyce Kilmer Park, Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York
Remarks:
The fountain was commissioned in 1888 by Empress Elizabeth of Austria for German poet Henrich Heine's birthplace of Dusseldorf, Germany, but resistance to Heine's political beliefs prevented its installation. In 1893, the fountain was acquired for $35,000 by New York's German-Jewish community who then gave it to the City of New York. Unable to be placed in Central Park because the female figure was not considered properly clothed at the time, the fountain finally found a home in the Bronx's Joyce Kilmer Park. Originally, the fountain was installed at the southern end of the park, then known as the Grand Concourse Plaza, but after suffering from vandalism and neglect, the fountain fell into disrepair and was eventually moved to the northern end of the Joyce Kilmer Park in 1940. However, a $1.2 million dollar restoration project in the summer of 1999 resulted in the relocation of the fountain back to its original location. The images on file in the Inventories are 1982 photographs of the fountain from the Art Commission of the City of New York files.
