    Description:
A figure grouping of four chaplains of the World War II troop transport ship, the U.S.S. Dorchester. The figures are standing in a circle, facing outward, in a miniaturized version of the Dorchester, with waves crashing overboard, as if it is sinking. The chaplain at the bow of the ship wears a knee-length, lapelled coat, and holds a cross to his chest in his proper left hand, his proper arm held by the chaplain on his proper right. The chaplain on his proper right wears a knee-length coat and cap. Of the two remaining chaplains, one holds a Bible next to his heart in his proper left hand, and the other has his proper right hand on the shoulder of a chaplain, with a Dorchester life raft in his hand. The sculpture is mounted upon a stepped base.

    Remarks:
Commemorates the four chaplains of different faiths who died on the U.S.S. Dorchester during World War II: Lieutenant George Lansing Fox (Methodist); Lieutenant Alexander David Goode (Jewish); Lieutenant John Patrick Washington (Roman Catholic); and Lieutenant Clark Vandersoll Poling (Dutch Reform). When the Dorchester was torpedoed by Germans on February 4, 1943, the four men gave their life jackets to others to remain onboard to comfort those left, and eventually went down with the ship. As it sank, they were seen linked arm-in-arm, heads uplifted in prayer.
