    Description: 
    Four times life-size head mounted on a tall pillar. One of eight heads which line the Merchandise Mart Plaza to honor outstanding American retail merchants. Edward Filene president of William Filene Sons Company in Boston. Filene was an innovator in the concepts of employee representation in management, higher wages and shorter hours, and an improvement in the standard of living through business prosperity. He developed the "automatic bargain basement" in which merchandise not sold in 30 days was donated to charity. He helped establish the use of credit cards with the first state law allowing their use in 1909. He founded the Twentieth Century Fund and was a part of the U. S. and International Chamber of Commerce.

    Remarks: 
    Base media given as marble in Bach and Riedy publications, but SOS! sruvey notes that base is either concrete or limestone with a marble plaque. Sculpture was placed in storage during reconstruction of the Merchandise Mart plaza in 1989-1990. IAS image files and the Bach and Gray publication contain overview photos of all eight heads. IAS group images are filed under Minna Harkavy's "Merchandise Mart Hall of Fame: Robert E. Wood.
