Description:
Seated portrait of Maskell Ewing (1758-1825) at a table in his library filled with law books resting on shelves in the background. He wears a blue coat and a yellow waistcoat representing his service as an ensign and adjutant of the New Jersey militia in 1776-1777. In his left hand, Ewing holds a letter with his name on it from Trenton lawyer William Churchill Houston. In his right hand, Ewing holds a quill pen. On the table are papers inscribed with an act of the New Jersey Assembly dated 1787.

Remarks:
In 1887 Maskell Ewing married Jane Hunter of Philadelphia and was admitted to the bar the same year. The following year he became the executor for the estate of Trenton lawyer William Churchill Houston, whose name is on the letter Ewing holds in this portrait. Ewing was trained in law by Houston and practiced in Trenton, where he also held civic and state legal positions.
