Elbert Hartwell English was born on March 6, 1816 at the foot of Capshaw Mountain, Madison County, Alabama, and died on Sept. 1, 1884 in Asheville, North Carolina. He was the son of James and Nancy (McCracken) English. He served one term in the Alabama Legislature. After moving to Arkansas in 1844, he was the State Supreme Court reporter for nine years. He was Chief Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court from 1855-1864, and later from 1874-1884. On Sept 30, 1840, he married his first wife, Julia Agnes Fisher, in Athens, Alabama. In July of 1872, he married his second wife, Mrs. Susan A. (Halsam) Wheless, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Julia Agnes (Fisher) English was born on Nov. 23, 1820 near Athens, Limestone County, Alabama. She died on June 7, 1871. She was the daughter of Jacob and Martha Blanton (Alexander) Fisher. On Sept. 30, 1840, she married Elbert Hartwell English.
